Do You Need Pest Control After a Storm? A Hurricane-Season Checklist
Table of Contents
Florida’s hurricane season runs June 1st through November 30th, and even a storm that causes no direct damage to your Bradenton home can leave behind conditions pests take advantage of almost immediately.
Here’s what to watch for once the skies clear.
Standing Water Means Mosquitoes Within Days
Mosquito eggs can hatch in standing water in as little as a few days under warm conditions, and a single storm can leave dozens of small water sources behind — clogged gutters, upturned patio furniture, tarps, kiddie pools, even bottle caps. After any significant rain event, a walk around the property to dump standing water is one of the fastest ways to blunt the mosquito spike that typically follows.
Displaced Rodents Look for the Nearest Dry Shelter
Flooding and heavy wind don’t just affect homes — they push rodents out of outdoor burrows, brush piles, and drainage areas, sending them looking for the closest dry, elevated space. Storm damage can also loosen soffits, siding, and roof flashing, creating new entry points at the exact moment rodent pressure outdoors is highest. It’s a combination worth taking seriously, especially in the days immediately following a storm.
Fire Ants Can Raft on Floodwater — and Wash Right Up to Your Door
One of the more surprising post-storm pest behaviors in Florida: fire ant colonies can link together using their own bodies to form a floating raft when their mound floods, keeping the colony — queen included — alive on the water’s surface until it reaches dry ground. That dry ground is sometimes a yard, a foundation, or a patio. A new ant mound appearing close to the house in the days after a storm is often exactly this.
A Quick Post-Storm Checklist
- Dump or drain any standing water within 24–48 hours, including gutters, tarps, and containers.
- Inspect the attic, garage, and roofline for new gaps where wind may have loosened siding, soffits, or flashing.
- Watch for new ant mounds appearing unusually close to the foundation or patio.
- Check window screens and door sweeps for storm damage that could let mosquitoes and other insects inside.
If you were away during the storm, do a full walk-through before assuming everything is fine — pest pressure often builds quietly in the days after, not during, the event itself.
